How we define the pharmaceuticals industry

Pharma spans small-molecule drugs, formulations, prodrugs, and biologics—often overlapping with biotech. To keep comparisons fair and apples-to-apples, we anchor this view to CPC subclasses that most directly capture drug substances and preparations. We emphasize A61K (medicinal preparations) and core small-molecule classes C07D/C07H, with C12N included only when claims clearly reflect biotech-derived drug products (e.g., proteins, cell therapies).

For our purposes, device-only claims (delivery hardware) live in Life Sciences unless the center of gravity is the drug formulation. Platform software or analytics claims sit in CS/IT unless they are drug-substance focused. For multi-industry filings, we classify by the primary CPC and standardized rules documented in the methodology.
